Di Matteo impressed by Cahill spirit

Roberto Di Matteo has admitted he was impressed by the attitude of Gary Cahill after the Chelsea defender played against Leicester City despite his distress over the condition of former Bolton Wanderers teammate Fabrice Muamba, the Independent has said.

Cahill opened the scoring for Chelsea in the Premier League side’s 5-2 victory over their Championship opposition, helping the Blues on their way to an FA Cup semi-final. Di Matteo said after the match: “[Cahill] was shaken like the whole football community and our thoughts and prayers go to the family of Fabrice but he managed to focus on the game and had a very good game as well.

After converting Juan Mata’s corner in the 12th minute Cahill revealed a t-shirt bearing a message of support for Muamba, who collapsed during Bolton’s FA Cup match with Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday evening. Cahill played for Bolton between January 2008 and January 2012, moving to the Reebok Stadium six months after Muamba switched to Bolton from Birmingham City.

Since arriving at Stamford Bridge in the winter transfer window, Cahill has made eight appearances, scoring his first goal for his new club against Leicester on Sunday.
