Benfica playmaker Nicolas Gaitan has warned Chelsea that the Portuguese side have every intention of staying in the Champions League, Sky
The two sides meet each other in the quarter-finals of the Champions League, with the first leg set to be staged at the Estadio da Luz on 27th March. Benfica will be underdogs in the tie, but have enjoyed a good season in the competition finishing top of their group ahead of Premier League champions Manchester United. The Portuguese outfit got past Zenit in the last 16 and Gaitan believes anything is possible for the club this season, especially since they have got so far.
Gaitan said: “At this stage of the Champions League, every team is dangerous. Chelsea will be very difficult to beat, but it is not impossible for us to eliminate them and reach the semi-finals. I consider this to be an equal contest which will be very open. Home advantage will not be a factor at this stage, because both clubs are of a high level.”
Gaitan has been touted by Manchester United since last summer and the Argentinian could be interested in a move to Old Trafford. The 23 year old impressed against Sir Alex Ferguson’s side in the group stages and United could make a move for Gaitan in the summer. Benfica picked up a 3-1 win over Beira Mar on Friday night, where he scored the second for the Lisbon side.
