Liverpool confirm Roma friendly in United States

Liverpool will meet Serie A side Roma in a pre-season friendly held in Boston’s iconic baseball stadium Fenway Park, the Daily Post has reported.

The match, scheduled for July 25, will be a re-run of the 1984 European Cup final that saw Liverpool eventually triumph 4-2 on penalties after a 1-1 draw. Left-back Alan Kennedy netted the winning spot kick in a match played at Roma’s Stadio Olimpico. Phil Neal had put the Reds in front only for Roberto Pruzzo to equalise before half-time.

Fenway is home to the Boston Red Sox, the baseball franchise owned by the same organisation that owns Liverpool, John W. Henry’s Fenway Sports Group. FSG bought the Red Sox in 2002, overseeing World Series triumphs in 2004 and 2007. Liverpool were purchased in October 2010 from previous owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett Jr.

Liverpool and Roma have played each other a number of times in European competition aside from the 1984 European Cup final, perhaps most notably in 2001 when a Liverpool side managed by Gerard Houllier defeated the Italians 2-0 in Rome on their way to winning the UEFA Cup. A Michael Owen brace gave Liverpool victory, although Roma did win the return leg at Anfield 1-0.
