Liverpool must make the most of Carling Cup win

Liverpool managing director Ian Ayre has advised the club to capitalise on the good feeling generated by winning the Carling Cup, the Liverpool Echo has reported.

Ayre is quoted by the newspaper as saying: “We’ve had certain things that have gone on that people have put a negative slant on Liverpool, but this is a positive one and we should grasp it with both hands and move forward with it.

Liverpool defeated Cardiff City 3-2 in a penalty shootout at the end of February to pick up their first trophy since winning the FA Cup against West Ham United in 2006. Dirk Kuyt, Stewart Downing and Glen Johnson all converted from 12 yards before Anthony Gerrard, cousin of Liverpool captain Steven, who also missed his kick, sent his effort wide.

Cardiff had originally taken a first-half lead when Joe Mason found the back of the net after 19 minutes, but Liverpool pegged back the Championship side through Martin Skrtel after an hour. Kuyt then put Liverpool in front for the first time in the game during extra-time but a last minute Ben Turner goal took the game to penalties.
