Liverpool summer tour threatened by Europa League qualifiers

A planned summer tour to the United States by Liverpool could be in doubt if the Reds do not finish at least fifth in the Premier League or win the FA Cup, the Daily Mail has revealed.

Liverpool are guaranteed a place in next season’s Europa League already by virtue of their League Cup victory over Cardiff City last month, but would enter the continental competition at the third qualifying stage, due to take place just over a fortnight before the start of the new Premier League season.

That would mean a Europa League fixture taking place soon after the end of Liverpool’s tour of the USA. But a victory in the FA Cup or fifth-place league finish would see Kenny Dalglish’s side enter the Europa League at a later stage, avoiding a potential fixture pile-up.

Liverpool meet Stoke City at the FA Cup quarter-final stage later this month, searching for a quick return to Wembley after triumphing on penalties over Cardiff in late February. In the league, Liverpool are currently seventh, seven points adrift of Chelsea who occupy fifth spot.
