Liverpool youngster Flanagan frustrated by Wigan defeat

Liverpool defender Jon Flanagan made his return to the first-team against Wigan, but was disappointed at the 2-1 home loss to the Latics, reports.

The 19 year old made his first start since August with a confident display at right-back, but was unable to prevent the Reds suffering from more home problems. Liverpool have drawn eight and lost twice at Anfield this season, but this defeat to Wigan was possibly the worst as the Latics are fighting for relegation. Reds boss Kenny Dalglish blamed tiredness for his side’s loss and included youngsters such as Flanagan in the side.

Jonjo Shelvey and Raheem Sterling also made late cameos at Anfield, but Flanagan was the most impressive and could be in line for a start when the Reds travel to Newcastle United next Sunday. The 19 year old was disappointed with what happened, but is looking forward to next weekend where he is hopeful Liverpool can pick up a win.

Flanagan said: “We worked hard and we’re obviously disappointed with the result, but we’ve got to pick ourselves up for the next game. I think I did alright, but the result is the main thing and we’re all disappointed with that. I’ll keep training hard and try to impress the boss”.
