Arsene Wenger believes the fight to nab third place in the Premier League is between his Arsenal side and four other clubs – Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur, Liverpool and the Gunners’ Monday evening opponents Newcastle United,
Wenger is quoted as saying: “We want to finish as high as we can. It will be difficult because we know that we face a massive battle there with Tottenham, Chelsea, Newcastle and maybe Liverpool.”
Arsenal are currently fourth in the table with a game in hand, to be played on Monday against Newcastle. A win over the Magpies would see Arsenal remain in fourth spot but move just a point behind Spurs. Arsenal have 49 points to their name while Spurs sit on 53. Wenger’s side are level on points with Chelsea in fifth but the Blues have played a game more. Newcastle lie in sixth position, five points behind Arsenal and Chelsea and nine adrift of Tottenham.
Third place is the final position which guarantees a team entry into the group stages of the Champions League. Last season Manchester City beat Arsenal to the spot by three points, pushing Arsenal into a Champions League play-off with Udinese which Arsenal won 3-1 on aggregate.
