Schmeichel tips Man United for title

Former Manchester United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel believes that Sir Alex Ferguson will guide the club to another league title this season, The Daily Star reports.

The former Danish international won five league titles with United in his career and also played for their title rivals this season Manchester City. Roberto Mancini’s side are two points ahead of United at the top of the table, but Schmeichel believes that United’s experience will help them hold their nerve. The 48 year old also believes it will be City who make mistakes and allow United back into the title race, as they have done so many times before.

United face a difficult task away at Tottenham this weekend, whereas City host struggling Bolton at the Etihad Stadium. City should be five points clear of United when Ferguson’s men take on Spurs, but the former Denmark shot-stopper is confident that United have what it takes.

Schmeichel said: ‘I think City have done exceptionally well, but I think they are scrapping a bit at the moment. There have been a few 1-0s, a few close calls. It’s a sign that the season is coming to a close. United have been in this position many, many times before. We know the significance of every result and of losing ground.

‘When I say “we”, I don’t mean the team, I mean the club, I mean the supporters – we know that, we’ve been there. The big task for City is: do they know that? It’s added pressure when you are leading going into March and April, because everyone is chasing you’, the 48 year old continued.
