Arsenal midfielder Arteta to miss rest of the season

Mikel Arteta will miss the last four Arsenal games of the Premier League season after suffering an ankle ligament injury in the Gunners’ 2-1 defeat by Wigan Athletic on Monday, the BBC has reported.

Arteta picked up the injury early in the match and was seen labouring as Wigan broke for their opening goal in the seventh minute of the fixture. The former Everton player was soon substituted and the BBC note that Arteta was seen leaving the Emirates Stadium on crutches.

The 30-year-old’s injury leaves Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger with something of a midfield headache, as Jack Wilshere will also miss the rest of the season, having not played at all since an injury in a pre-season friendly. Abou Diaby meanwhile has struggled for fitness in recent months while Yossi Benayoun cannot play against Chelsea this weekend as he is on loan at Arsenal from the Blues. The BBC believe Aaron Ramsey will replace Arteta for the Chelsea contest.
