Butt praises Manchester City but backs Manchester United to retain Premier League crown

Former Manchester United midfielder Nicky Butt has heaped praise on Manchester City but still believes his former club will retain the Premier League title, the Manchester Evening News has reported.

Butt was a graduate of United’s youth academy, part of the generation of players including Gary Neville, Paul Scholes and David Beckham who won a number of trophies at Old Trafford. Butt, now 37, predicts his former club will hold on to their lead at the top of the table to win their 20th league title, but feels City’s midfield is amongst the best in the world.

He said: “You can pick any combination from the choices at City and it is a quality, world-class department. It is quite frightening the choice they have…I have to hold my hands up and say City’s midfield is as good as any I have seen.

Butt, who also played for Newcastle United and Birmingham City, as well as a brief spell in China, added that he feels United’s big game experience will help them in the forthcoming Manchester derby, where a win for Sir Alex Ferguson’s side would take them six points clear of City with two games to play. Butt said: “United always get a result in the big names when they need one, and that is down to the manager. I just don’t see United losing on Monday night.
