Cahill lined up in the centre of defence alongside captain John Terry, replacing David Luiz who was injured in the FA Cup semi-final win over Tottenham Hotspur. Cahill made some crucial blocks against the Spanish side, contributing a great deal to the single goal advantage Chelsea now take to the Nou Camp after Didier Drogba struck just before half-time.
The England international added that he took confidence from the ease with which he has adapted to playing for his country. Cahill said: “You’re always trying to prove things to yourself. It’s nice because I made the step up to international football, so I felt I could do that from the games I have played with England.”
Cahill made his England debut in September 2010, replacing Spurs defender Michael Dawson in a 4-0 win over Bulgaria. Cahill’s first England start came in March 2011 as the Three Lions drew 1-1 with Ghana.
