Cruyff recommends Begiristain for Liverpool role

Former Barcelona sporting director Txiki Begiristain could replace Damien Comolli as the director of football at Anfield, according to the Metro.

Liverpool are looking to replace the Frenchman, who parted company with the club earlier this week, and despite being told that primary target John Cruyff would not be interested in moving to England, Cruyff tipped Begiristain for the role.

Begiristain is highly regarded by some of Europe’s top clubs and has previously been linked with senior roles at both Chelsea and Manchester City. The former Spain international left the Nou Camp in 2010 after president Joan Laporta’s departure.

If Begiristain, who played a part in building the current Barcelona team by bringing in Dani Alves, David Villa and Gerard Pique, was handed the job, he would look to implement a change in the recruitment strategy at Anfield and the focus would be very much on players under the age of 21.
