Arsenal centre-back Johan Djourou has said the Gunners must recover from their defeat by Wigan Athletic with a strong performance at Champions League rivals Chelsea if Arsene Wenger’s side hope to maintain third place in the Premier League, the
Djourou played 74 minutes of Monday evening’s defeat to the Latics before being replaced by midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain as Wenger attempted in vain to pull back the 2-1 deficit. The Switzerland international defender however believes Arsenal are still in pole position to clinch third place. He said: “We would rather be in this situation that where the others are. The most important thing is to come back stronger, and what better chance to do it than against Chelsea?”
Arsenal currently hold a seven point lead over their London rivals, who sit in sixth place. Newcastle United in fifth and fourth-placed Tottenham Hotspur separate the Blues from Arsenal, with Spurs five points adrift of the Emirates Stadium club, level on points with Newcastle. Chelsea meanwhile trail Newcastle by two points. Arsenal have however played a game more than the three sides in the chasing pack.
