France striker Giroud attracting Arsenal interest

Arsenal’s summer squad re-building could see the arrival on Montpellier forward Olivier Giroud at the Emirates Stadium, the Daily Telegraph has reported.

The newspaper adds that Arsene Wenger is seeking to overhaul his striking options with the purchase of Lukas Podolski and at least one other forward, while retaining the services of captain Robin van Persie under a new contract. The skipper’s current deal is due to expire in 2013.

Blackburn Rovers winger Junior Hoilett is another name on Wenger’s list of potential purchases, the Telegraph claims, but Hoilett is behind Giroud, with Wenger instructing France-based scout and former Arsenal player Gilles Grimandi to keep an eye on Giroud.

Giroud was linked to a move to Arsenal’s Premier League rivals Newcastle United during the January transfer window, only for the move to collapse and the Magpies turn their attention to Papiss Cisse instead. At the time, the Montpellier owner Louis Nicollin valued Giroud at between £42m and £50m due to the length of time on his contract, which runs until 2014.
