Frank Lampard has lavished praise on interim Chelsea manager Roberto Di Matteo for what he has achieved in the few short months since replacing Andre Villas-Boas, the
Di Matteo was formerly assistant manager under Villas-Boas but when the Portuguese was sacked in March, the ex-Chelsea midfielder was asked to take temporary control of the club until the end of the season. Since then Di Matteo has masterminded Chelsea’s progression into the finals of both the FA Cup and the Champions League, leading to calls from many quarters for the Italian to be appointed to the position on a permanent basis.
While acknowledging that the club’s hierarchy will make the decision, Lampard stressed the good work Di Matteo has done since stepping into the vacancy. He said: “I can’t speak highly enough of him. He has created an atmosphere and got players playing. Those results don’t lie.” The 33-year-old added: “It’s a club decision. They will sit down in the summer with him but I can’t speak highly enough for what he’s done so far. He’s been incredible.”
