Manchester United will sign Benfica midfielder Nicolas Gaitan for a £20m fee this summer with full-back Fabio da Silva and striker Federico Macheda moving in the opposite direction, the
Gaitan, a left-sided or central attacking midfielder, is reported to have a release clause equivalent to £38m in his contract and the Telegraph add that Benfica were believed to be demanding the full amount before they would sell the 24-year-old. However, the offer of a season-long loan for Brazilian defender Fabio and a possible permanent switch for Macheda, plus cash, appears to have tempted Benfica into a sale.
Sir Alex Ferguson saw Gaitan in action twice against United ins this season’s Champions League group stage, first in September when Gaitan’s pass created Oscar Cardozo’s goal in a 1-1 draw in Lisbon, then in the return fixture in November at Old Trafford. There, Gaitan’s cross was deflected off Patrice Evra and onto Phil Jones, wrong-footing David de Gea and giving Benfica an early lead. The match eventually finished a 2-2 draw.
