Racing Santander went down 3-0 at Real Sociedad to send the Cantabrians to La Segunda after 10 years in the top flight.
Second-half goals from Antoine Griezmann (2) and Imanol Agirretxe ensured Alvaro Cervera’s men are mathematically relegated while Sociedad guaranteed top-flight football at Anoeta for another year.
Sporting Gijon kept their slim hopes of safety alive with a convincing 3-0 win at Espanyol, whose dream of European football is all but over with this defeat. Javier Clemente’s team are now four points behind Villarreal in 17th place after Adrian Colunga, Oscar Trejo and Mate Bilic got on the scoresheet, with the Catalans jeered off the pitch at the end by disgruntled fans.
Villarreal continue to make life difficult for themselves as they loiter on the fringe of the relegation zone, this time failing to overcome a stubborn Osasuna side at El Madrigal. Bruno’s strike on the stroke of half-time gave the Yellow Submarine the advantage, but the hosts failed to capitalise on it after the break and allowed Raul Garcia to ensure the Pamplona-based side returned home with a share of the spoils with a 72nd-minute equaliser.
At the top of the table Levante moved back into fourth spot at the expense of Malaga with a 3-1 victory over Granada at the Ciutat de Valencia. Arouna Kone gave the home side the lead immediately after the break only for Odion Ighalo to level matters 20 minutes later. However, strikes from Xavi Torres and Valdo stole the points for La Liga’s surprise team to give them a great chance of Champions League football next season.
Saturday’s other game was a middle-of-the-table clash between Getafe and Real Mallorca at the Coliseum Alfonso Perez. A Victor Casadesus header on the half-hour mark put Mallorca ahead before Alejandro Alfaro and Tomer Hemed extended the lead midway through the second period. Alexis scored a consolation for El Geta in stoppage time but their aspirations of gatecrashing the Europe League spots now look doomed after this 3-1 setback.
