Rossi injury blow for Villarreal

Injured Villarreal striker Giuseppe Rossi has received a massive blow to his comeback plans with the news he will be out for a further six months.

The Italian international was just one week away from getting the all clear for a return to first-team action after suffering cruciate ligament damage to his right knee in a game against Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu last October. However, El Economista reports that Rossi sustained the exact same injury in training on Friday morning and will now miss the remainder of the La Liga season and Italy’s involvement in Euro 2012 this summer.

The news will come as a shock to both club and country, with Villarreal President Fernando Roig having said only this week that Rossi’s absence for the best part of the season has been a major factor in his club’s disappointing campaign. Italian national team Coach Cesare Prandelli will also have to make do without the 25-year-old, who featured in seven Euro qualifiers and scored once.

Rossi has played in just 14 matches so far this season, scoring three times in La Primera and twice in the Champions League.
