However, the hosts had to come from behind after conceding a 19th minute goal courtesy of Alvaro Negredo’s stunning overhead kick from Piotr Trochowski’s pass, before Miguel Torres levelled on 35 minutes when a corner fell invitingly for him to turn home from close range.
Getafe took the lead four minutes after the break, Mehdi Lacen scoring his first-ever goal for the club with a left-foot shot into the bottom corner, and Miku got a third for the Madrid side 15 minutes later when he beat Javi Varas following a good run by Pedro Rios. Rios himself got in on the act in the 69th minute with a header at the far post from Mane’s cross before Miku poked home past Varas four minutes later to complete the rout.
The win takes Getafe level on 45 points with Sevilla and eyeing an unlikely Europa League place, whilst the visitors’ early-season aspirations have nosedived and boss Michel was left seeking a reason for his side’s capitulation.
“I have no explanation,” said Michel. “Nobody could have predicted that. In the first half we had chances and dominated the game, but what happened in the second half was inexplicable. There are no excuses.
“A team like us should never lose like this. But we cannot just turn the page and hide and I will speak to the players.”
