The Gunners’ last league fixture is against West Bromwich Albion on May 13, the newspaper notes, with van Persie due to join up with the Netherlands squad on May 17, leaving Arsene Wenger and the Arsenal hierarchy a four-day window to tie down the striker. Van Persie’s contract expires in 2013 but a new £120,000 per week deal is on the table.
Speaking on the eve of Arsenal’s meeting with Chelsea, which could prove vital to the Gunners’ hopes of qualifying for next season’s Champions League, Wenger said: “Robin’s future will be sorted out at the end of the season. Do we want it done at the start of the European Championships? Yes.” While the Netherlands do not play their first game of the competition until June 9, against Denmark, van Persie is likely to be away with his country from mid-May, rendering contract negotiations more difficult to arrange.
