Vermaelen confident Arsenal can retain Premier League third place

Arsenal defender Thomas Vermaelen has revealed his belief that the Gunners can hold onto third place in the Premier League and with it, the automatic place in the group stage of the Champions League, the Daily Mail has reported.

Following Arsenal’s 0-0 draw with Chelsea on Saturday, the Gunners are three points ahead of Newcastle United, who moved fourth after their 3-0 win over Stoke City. The Magpies were the only team of the Champions League hopefuls to take three points, as Tottenham Hotspur lost 1-0 to relegation-threatened Queens Park Rangers.

Vermaelen is quoted as saying: “It will be a big effort for everybody to get that third place…it is going to be tight, but it is going to be interesting. It is going to be hard to keep third place but I am confident we will.

Arsenal’s last three fixtures see them travel to Stoke City, host Norwich City and, on the last day of the season, make the trip to West Bromwich Albion. The Mail article quotes Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger as predicting his side will need to win at least two out of those three games to seal their place in next year’s Champions League.
