The 27-year-old spent the season at the San Siro, having spent the entirety of the last campaign with Juventus, who this year were crowned Serie A champions after going the whole season undefeated. Milan finished as runners-up but Aquilani did not play the required 25 games to bring about a £5m move to the Rossoneri.
Aquilani’s agent said his client would have played the necessary number if not for injury, and added that if a deal cannot be agreed with Milan, Aquilani would report for pre-season training at Melwood. Kenny Dalglish has previously said he would welcome Aquilani back to the club, but Aquilani is understood to wish to remain in Italy.
