Arsenal captain Robin van Persie wanted by Juventus

Robin van Persie is attracting interest from the newly-crowned champions of Italy Juventus as the contract of the Arsenal captain enters its final year, the Guardian has reported.

Van Persie’s expiring deal has been well-publicised and with negotiations not yet underway – postponed until the end of the season and possibly after Euro 2012 – Barcelona and Manchester City have been linked with a move for the Netherlands international. The Guardian reports, however, that Juventus are in the market for a striker and believe they can tempt Arsenal into selling van Persie, or, if that move fails, Liverpool into parting with Luis Suarez. Gonzalo Higuain, the Real Madrid forward, is Juventus’ third option.

Van Persie, Suarez or Higuain? They are three important players,” Giuseppe Marotta, the Juventus general director said, adding: “If one of them arrives here it is not because he will be the less talented as other things have to be taken into account, such as the financial aspect.

Juventus this year won their first Serie A title since the Calciopoli scandal of 2006 saw the club stripped of two of the titles they had previously won. Juventus were also relegated as part of the punishment for their involvement in the affair but under the leadership of former player Antonio Conte, the Old Lady currently lead last season’s champions Milan by four points with one game still to play.
