Bayern boss Heynckes impressed by Chelsea manager Di Matteo

Chelsea interim manager Roberto Di Matteo has won praise from his opposite number at Champions League final opponents Bayern Munich, Jupp Heynckes, ahead of the weekend meeting between the two sides, the Guardian has reported.

Heynckes admitted he admired the way in which Di Matteo has handled himself since replacing Andre Villas-Boas in March in the Chelsea dugout, commending Di Matteo for changing the atmosphere around Stamford Bridge and developing a sense of unified purpose at the club that had been missing under pervious managers.

Heynckes said: “I have been very impressed by the way Di Matteo acts beside the pitch. He is very relaxed and seems in control. That shows his team are close together, fighting towards one goal. The philosophy has changed recently. That is the psychological feeling he has achieved at the club.

Since replacing Villas-Boas after a defeat to West Bromwich Albion Di Matteo has led Chelsea to 12 wins in 19 games, with only three defeats in the process. The former Chelsea and Italy midfielder also won the FA Cup, with a 5-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur in the semi-final and a 2-1 defeat of Liverpool in the final to claim the trophy he won as a player in 1997.
