Manchester United should not expect Sunderland to roll over and hand Sir Alex Ferguson’s side three points towards their push for the Premier League title, Lee Cattermole has told the the
United have to win against Sunderland on Sunday and hope Manchester City drop points at home to Queens Park Rangers if Ferguson’s side want to pip their local rivals to the post and claim a 20th league title in the process. But Cattermole has rejected the idea that Sunderland have nothing to play for, with the Black Cats captain insisting that the team’s professional pride will ensure they give United a competitive contest at the Stadium of Light.
“As a player you never want to get beaten. It kills your weekend and you go home unhappy. You play for pride, your team and fans, and we have got a lot to play for,” Cattermole said, adding: “ It might be a big game for United, but it is three points in the Premier League and that makes it a massive game for us too. Just because we can’t win the league doesn’t mean it is worth any less to us.”
Sunderland are currently 11th in the table with 45 points, but if results on the final day went against them could drop as low as 15th, just three places outside the relegation zone. Conversely, if Sunderland were to beat United and other results fell in their favour, the Mackems could end the campaign in 10th, creeping into the top half of the table.
