Champions League final red card haunts Chelsea striker Drogba

Didier Drogba is desperate to banish memories of his last Champions League final appearance when Chelsea face Bayern Munich in this year’s climax to the tournament on Saturday, Sky Sports has reported.

Drogba was part of the Chelsea side that lost to Manchester United on penalties in 2008 but the striker was not on the field when the decisive spot kicks were taken, having been sent off late in extra-time for slapping United centre-back Nemanja Vidic during a melee between the sides. In Drogba’s absence John Terry stepped up to take a penalty and slipped as he struck the ball, handing United the trophy.

Drogba said: “It was a difficult moment for me and for the club as well. I apologised to the fans. It’s one memory I cannot forget but, at the same time, it’s the past.” He added that both he and the club learnt a lot from the 2008 final, previously the only time Chelsea have reached that stage of the competition.

To get to this year’s final Chelsea had to overcome the holders Barcelona, and did so with a goal from Drogba in the first leg at Stamford Bridge.
