Writing in the match programme ahead of the final game of the league season against Blackburn Rovers, which Chelsea won 2-1, Buck said: “We do not consider that to be satisfactory and Roman [Abramovich] and the board will be working over the summer to try to ensure that doesn’t happen again.” Chelsea’s hopes of a top four finish were ended in the penultimate game, when a much-changed side lost 4-1 to Liverpool at Anfield.
In order to qualify for next season’s Champions League Chelsea must now beat Bayern Munich in the final of this season’s competition, to be played at Bayern’s own Allianz Arena on May 19. The match will be Chelsea’s second Champions League final, with the first coming against Manchester United in 2009. Chelsea lost on penalties when John Terry, the Chelsea captain suspended against Bayern, slipped as he took the decisive spot kick, with his effort striking the post.
