Chelsea have to stop Bayern widemen, Le Saux insists

Former Chelsea left-back Graeme Le Saux believes that his former teammate Roberto di Matteo will get the system correct in the Champions League final, which helps the Blues stop the Bayern Munich wide threats.

Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery are expected to line up on either wing for the German side and look to get past a weakened Chelsea defence. Le Saux made 230 appearances for the Blues in two different spells before and after his move to Blackburn and has experience of playing in European football, as well as representing England on an international level. The 43 year old thinks that Chelsea will stick with their two defensive midfield players in order to support either full-back, as they look to halt the attacking flow of the four-time European champions.

Le Saux told A Different League: “The most important thing from my point of view is stopping the wide players. They like to play the 4-2-3-1 formation. If you play 4-3-3, you do not have the full back protection. It’s important who plays in defensive midfield stops Robben and Ribery, because they’re great going forward as they proved against Real Madrid. Robbie (di Matteo) will have been working on the team and I’m sure they have worked out the formation.”

Chelsea did fantastically well to stop Barcelona in the semi-final, both home and away, and Le Saux believes that Di Matteo’s side will not deploy the same tactics in Munich on Saturday night. The former England international reserved praise for the Blues’ resolute defence, but has backed them to take the game to Bayern Munich in the Allianz Arena and hopefully come out with the victory.

Le Saux was talking at a Google+ Hangout at the UEFA Champions Festival in Munich.
