Di Matteo denies Chelsea want to swap Torres for Falcao

Interim Chelsea manager Roberto Di Matteo has denied rumours that the Premier League club are interested in Atletico Madrid striker Radamel Falcao, and that Fernando Torres has been offered to the La Liga side in a swap deal for the forward, ESPN has reported.

Torres began his career with Atletico, captaining the side as a 19-year-old and scoring 91 goals in 243 appearances before moving to Liverpool in 2007. The suggestion was that Torres would be offered to Atletico as well as around £15m for the services of Falcao, who has netted 33 goals in 42 games this season, his first in Spain since moving from Porto of Portugal last summer.

Di Matteo however refused to confirm such a proposition was ever made, insisting that he expected Torres to still be a Chelsea player this time next year. “This is only speculation. I have a great relationship with Fernando, and I believe he will be here next season,” Di Matteo said.

Falcao starred as Atleti won the Europa League this season, scoring twice in the final against fellow La Liga side Athletic Bilbao to win his second-consecutive Europa League trophy, having won the competition a year ago with Porto.
