Di Matteo highlights points dropped earlier in the season as Chelsea miss out on top-four finish

Roberto Di Matteo has pinpointed Chelsea’s early-season form as the reason why the club cannot now finish in the top four of the Premier League, the Daily Telegraph has reported. Chelsea’s defeat to Liverpool on Tuesday evening means that if the Blues are to qualify for next season’s Champions League, they will have to win the competition outright by beating Bayern Munich on May 19.

Chelsea find themselves unable to drop any lower nor climb any higher than sixth in the table with one game to play. The Stamford Bridge side are eight points ahead of seventh-place Everton and four points behind Newcastle United in fifth, meaning Chelsea’s final game of the season, at home to already-relegated Blackburn Rovers, will have little riding on it for either side. Chelsea lost 4-1 to Liverpool at Anfield just days after beating the same opposition 2-1 in the FA Cup final at Wembley.

Di Matteo said: “We played 37 games in the Premier League, it wasn’t the one we lost today that made the difference. We lost many points during the whole season, so it’s not just today.
