After confirming that he will leave Chelsea this summer, Didier Drogba has praised Fernando Torres and backed the Spain international to lead the club’s line with success in his absence, Press
The late equalising goal Drogba scored in the Champions League final was the first time either Drogba or Torres has scored while the other was on the pitch but Drogba, who also converted the match-winning penalty, is confident Torres will succeed at Stamford Bridge despite an uncertain time since his move from Liverpool in January 2011.
Drogba said: “It has been difficult for him, but he has showed he is the man. Next season is going to be his season and I will try to speak to him. We have a good relationship. We don’t understand why we didn’t play together more, but that’s the past. Torres is the future.”
Torres scored 11 goals in 49 games for Chelsea in the season just ended, compared to Drogba’s 13 in 35, with Press Association suggesting the former often had to play second fiddle to the latter. Drogba is however expected to sign for Chinese side Shanghai Shenua where another former Blues striker, Nicolas Anelka, is currently plying his trade and reportedly holds great influence over the decisions made at the club.
