With Wayne Rooney suspended for England’s first two group games of the tournament Carroll looks likely to lead the line in the Manchester United striker’s absence, and Gerrard believes the former Newcastle United player showcased a great deal of heart and desire in the 1-0 victory.
Gerrard also insisted that a fit and in-form Carroll would be a valuable weapon to England. He added: “Andy worked so hard and put a real shift in. He will be a big asset for this team if he can play to his level. Not only is his form good at the moment, he is putting in a hell of a lot of hard work for the team.”
Carroll ended the regular season with three goals in his last eight games, including the winner in the FA Cup semi-final against Everton and a goal in the final itself after coming on as a substitute.
