King Juan Carlos to miss cup final

According to Sport, King Juan Carlos I will be absent for the Copa del Rey final on May 25.

The reigning monarch is still recovering from a hip operation he underwent after suffering injury during an elephant-hunting incident in Botswana in mid-April, for which he received condemnation from the Spanish public after the cost of the trip was revealed at a time of severe austerity measures in the country.

In addition, there were calls for the King to resign his role as Honorary President of the Spanish branch of the World Wildlife Fund, with more than 60,000 people signing a petition for him to do so.

Instead, the honour of presenting the cup to the winners of the clash between Athletic Bilbao and Barcelona at the Vicente Calderon will now fall to the King’s son, the Prince of Asturias.
