The Chelsea quintet have been allowed extra time off by Hodgson to recover from the exertions of the Champions League final and the run-in to the season. Lampard, Cahill and Cole all played as Chelsea defeated Bayern Munich on penalties to clinch their first ever European Cup victory, while Sturridge was an unused substitute and Terry was suspended, having been sent off in the semi-final against Barcelona.
Lampard struggled to put his finger on exactly what qualities had helped Chelsea to success in Europe, but felt if he and his club mates could carry them into international duty, then the national team would feel the benefit. He added: “If we can bring some of the play, the spirit, the determination – whatever it is that’s won us the Champions League – into the England team then hopefully that can help this summer.”
