An injury to Danny Welbeck means Andy Carroll is almost certain to start for England in their first pre-Euro 2012 friendly against Norway, the
Welbeck limped out of training at Manchester City’s Etihad Stadium this week, leaving Roy Hodgson with few options for the match to be played on Saturday, and even fewer for the opening group game against France. Wayne Rooney is suspended for that match and the one that follows, with the Telegraph claiming that creates an opening for Carroll to start.
Carroll reportedly impressed in a training match that saw England coach Gary Neville playing in defence, attempting to mark the burly target man. At one point, the newspaper reveals, Carroll overpowered Joleon Lescott to connect with a cross sent in by Ashley Young.
Welbeck has been struggling with an ankle problem and could not take part in the training session, leaving him a doubt to face Norway this weekend and handing Carroll the chance to cement his place in Hodgson’s thoughts.
