David Luiz and Gary Cahill have returned to training to give interim Chelsea manager Roberto Di Matteo some positive news ahead of Saturday’s Champions League final against Bayern Munich, Reuters
The pair are Di Matteo’s last remaining senior central defenders due to the suspension of both Branislav Ivanovic and John Terry, but both Cahill and Luiz missed the run-in to the Premier League season as well as the FA Cup final win over Liverpool. Luiz injured his hamstring in the semi-final against Tottenham Hotspur while Cahill suffered the same injury in the Champions League semi-final second-leg against Barcelona.
If neither Cahill nor Luiz was fit to play Munich Di Matteo would be facing the choice between deploying Sam Hutchinson, the young defender who only recently made his return to football after a serious injury appeared to force early retirement, or playing a combination of out-of-position players in the heart of the backline.
