Manchester City believe van Persie will leave Arsenal

Manchester City are confident of landing Arsenal captain Robin van Persie this summer and could make the Netherlands international the club’s highest-paid player, the Guardian has reported.

Yaya Toure is currently the City player taking the greatest weekly wage but the newspaper indicates City chairman Khaldoon al-Mubarak may sign off on a deal that tops Toure’s £250,000 per week. Arsenal had hoped to tie up van Persie’s contract before Euro 2012 and Arsene Wenger and chief executive Ivan Gazidis met with the player and his agent this week but news of a new deal has not been forthcoming. Arsenal have also taken the step of barring van Persie from speaking to the media while on international duty.

The Guardian also reveals that Manchester United, Juventus, Real Madrid and Barcelona all retain interest in signing the 28-year-old, but the new Premier League champions Manchester City believe they are leading the chasing pack.
