Pochettino to remain with Espanyol

Mauricio Pochettino is set to continue as Espanyol boss next season despite recent reports to the contrary, according to AS.

The Argentine has seen a steady decline in club finances since taking the reins at the Cornella El-Prat in January, 2009, with staff wages reduced from a total of €35m to the current €25m on offer. However, the 40-year-old former Espanyol central defender is believed to be prepared to accept the present imbalance between sales and investments, having seen the likes of Victor Ruiz, Didac Vila and Dani Osvaldo transferred out of financial necessity in recent times.

Last summer Pochettino was faced with the same problem regarding the incorporation of new players and saw his star striker Osvaldo depart for Roma, although the arrivals of Kalu Uche and Philippe Coutinho in the winter transfer market helped make up for the Brazilian’s goals the previous campaign.

Nonetheless, Espanyol have once more missed out on European qualification despite challenging the top six places for the past few seasons, and Pochettino is due to meet director of football Ramon Planes this week to decide on a course of action for next term.
