Liverpool could appoint Louis van Gaal as sporting director as the club’s owners, Fenway Sports Group, continue to consider the structure they wish to establish at Anfield, the
Van Gaal was first linked with Liverpool after Damien Comolli was sacked in April, the Guardian adds, but when the services of Kenny Dalglish were dispensed with earlier in May FSG revised their plans for the structure of the club. Van Gaal remained under consideration for a different role, with the intention becoming to hire an experienced name to work in conjunction with a young but previously successful manager. Van Gaal fits the first part of the brief, having begun his coaching career with AZ Alkmaar in the mid-1980s.
The 60-year-old went on to win three Dutch league titles with Ajax in the early to mid-1990s, as well as the Champions League in 1994-95. With Barcelona van Gaal twice claimed the Spanish league crown and in his last managerial post at Bayern Munich, which ended in April 2011, van Gaal won the Bundesliga trophy and took Bayern to the Champions League final in 2009-10.
