Van Persie to become highest-paid Arsenal player if a new contract is agreed

Robin van Persie will be given a record-breaking contract to convince him to stay at Arsenal, the Daily Mail has reported, one worth more than the deals handed to former Gunners captains Thierry Henry and Cesc Fabregas.

The Mail puts the total worth of the proposed contract in the region of £7m per season, or £130,000 a week, almost double what van Persie currently earns. As a further incentive van Persie will receive a signing-on fee of £5m if he accepts the terms on the table. The contract would last for three years, taking van Persie to the age of 31. Talks are due to begin on Wednesday.

Arsene Wenger will reportedly focus on the football reasons van Persie should remain at the Emirates Stadium rather than pushing the financial merits of the decision to remain in North London. Chief executive Ivan Gazidis will also be present at the talks which are expected to run-on past Euro 2012, but the Mail insists van Persie’s future will become clearer if not certain by the end of the week.
