Van der Vaart backs Tottenham move for Vertonghen

Tottenham midfielder Rafael van der Vaart has backed his club’s reported move for Ajax centre-back Jan Vertonghen, and revealed he has been consulted by Spurs management over the deal.

The former Real Madrid man, who signed in a late transfer deadline deal for £8m back in 2010, is a former Ajax player, and played more than 100 games for the Amsterdam club, winning two Eredivisie titles before his move to Hamburg in Germany. With knowledge of his former club, it has been reported in the Daily Mail that van der Vaart was asked for his views on the move, prompting the Dutchman to reveal: Spurs asked me about him. If he’s sensible , he will opt to join us.”

He also revealed his support for the approach, and suggested that Tottenham’s movements in the market may be underway: ”I hope Jan comes to Tottenham. As far as I know the deal is close to being done.”

25-year-old Vertonghen is playing in his 5th season in the Ajax defence, having played 30 league matches this season, and netting an impressive seven goals. He has also gained 36 caps for Belgium.
