Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger believes the ambition the club have shown in signing Germany international Lukas Podolski can help keep captain Robin van Persie at the Emirates Stadium, the
Podolski is to join Arsenal this summer in an £11m transfer that was confirmed earlier this week while van Persie’s contract is due to expire in 2013. Talks over a new deal are expected to take place at the end of the season but the Mail notes that the likes of Italian side Milan, Spain’s Barcelona and Arsenal’s Premier League rivals Manchester City are preparing offers to tempt the Gunners into selling the striker if a contract renewal is not agreed.
Wenger however feels that van Persie will be impressed by the arrival of Podolski, adding that players the calibre of the Dutchman want to work with teammates on their level, and that Podolski is of a stature similar to the skipper. Wenger said: “Great players like to be with great players, so it helps to get them in. We want Robin to stay because he is convinced we can play for the championship. I believe we have that.”
