Arsenal defender Vermaelen backs Hazard to succeed at Chelsea

Eden Hazard’s move to Chelsea may not have been confirmed by the club itself yet but one of his Belgium teammates, Arsenal defender Thomas Vermaelen, has backed the Lille midfielder to succeed in the Premier League, Press Association has reported. The pair are expected to feature when Belgium play England at Wembley on Saturday.

Hazard tweeted earlier this week that he was joining the Champions League winners but official confirmation from Chelsea or Lille has not been forthcoming. Yet Vermaelen, who moved to the Premier League in 2009, is confident his international colleague will prove his worth in English football next season.

Vermaelen said: “I think he is a great player. Technically he is one of the best in our team. He will do well for Chelsea and I think he will be nice to watch for the spectators.

Hazard will join a long list of Belgian internationals plying their trade in the Premier League. Not only is Vermaelen at Arsenal, but Marouane Fellaini plays for Everton, Moussa Dembele for Fulham, Simon Mignolet for Sunderland and Romelu Lukaku for Chelsea, while Vincent Kompany captained Manchester City to the Premier League title last season.
