Arsenal must make a statement to keep van Persie, says Gullit

Arsenal have to show Robin van Persie they can win trophies if they want to keep their captain at the club beyond this summer, former Chelsea manager and Netherlands international Ruud Gullit has said, according to ESPN.

Guillit added that he believed van Persie wants to be part of a successful team, and this summer is when the Gunners must show the striker what they intend to do to transform themselves from outside contenders to title winners. Arsene Wenger has already wrapped up the signing of Germany striker Lukas Podolski, but Gullit feels his compatriot van Persie will want to see more big names arriving at the club.

He said: “The question for van Persie will be what Arsenal are going to do to make this a winning team. The best players want to win trophies.

Gullit himself is no stranger to success, having won titles with Feyenoord and PSV Eindhoven in Holland and Milan in Italy, as well as the FA Cup with Chelsea as player-manager in 1997 and the European Cup with Milan twice, in 1989 and 1990 and the 1988 European Championships with his country.
