Former England midfielder Paul Gascoigne has praised Liverpool striker Andy Carroll and said the good form shown by the striker at the end of the Premier League season could benefit England at Euro 2012, the
Carroll impressed many observers with his performances in Liverpool’s last few matches of the season, scoring the winning goal in the FA Cup semi-final against Everton and coming off the bench in the final itself to nearly tip the balance of the match away from Chelsea and into Liverpool’s favour, scoring once and having another cleared off the line. Gascoigne believes that if Carroll can maintain that momentum, he could be the player to fire England to success in Poland and Ukraine this summer.
Gascoigne added that although Carroll did not have a particularly good season, scoring only nine goals in 47 games, the last few weeks of the campaign are what counts. He said: “It would boost his morale because he’s not had the best of seasons. But he’s coming good. He must be a German – he’s coming good towards the end.”
