Chiellini to miss Italy clash with England

Italy’s preparations for their Euro 2012 quarter-final match against England have been dealt a blow, after scans reveal Giorgio Chiellini will miss the game, reports UEFA.com.

The Juventus defender picked up the thigh injury in the Azzurri’s match against the Republic of Ireland on Monday, and it seems that the influential 27-year-old will miss the quarter-final game against England on Sunday.

Team doctor Enrico Castellacci confirmed the news to assembled journalists saying: “The scan he underwent confirmed it’s a strain, he will certainly miss the game on Sunday. Obviously in a competition like this you have to try everything to have him back as quickly as possible but we will not take any unnecessary risks with his muscles.”

This is not the first time Chiellini has suffered from this kind of Injury; a thigh strain back in May almost forced him out of the European Championships though the Italian medical staff were quick to dismiss the two as related saying: “It’s nothing related to the injury he suffered just ahead of the finals.”

Fellow Juve player Leonardo Bonucci was brought on to replace the injured Chiellini, and it’s thought that coach Cesare Prandelli will start the 25-year-old to combat the threat of Wayne Rooney and Danny Welbeck on Sunday.

Chiellini will be bitterly disappointed not to feature in the England match; having been capped for his country on 53 occasions, he has become an important part of the Azzurri’s 13 competitive match unbeaten run.
