The Magpies face competition from a number of clubs on the continent, the newspaper adds, but Alan Pardew’s long-standing interest in the defender is likely to be rewarded. Debuchy has reportedly told Cabeye, a former teammate at Lille, more than once that he wants to play with him again on Tyneside. The message has also been made clear to the Newcastle hierarchy via Debuchy’s agent.
Newcastle are said to believe they will wrap up the signing of Debuchy, and indeed feel they would have done so already if the player was not concentrating on representing his country at Euro 2012. An injury to Arsenal defender Bacary Sagna confirmed Debuchy as Laurent Blanc’s first-choice right-back, and Debuchy duly started France’s first game of the tournament against England.
