Di Matteo the only choice for Chelsea, says Leboeuf

Former Chelsea defender Frank Leboeuf has hailed his ex-teammate Roberto Di Matteo as the right choice to become the Blues’ next full-time manager, according to the Independent. Di Matteo had been in temporary control since March, guiding the club to an FA Cup and Champions League double.

Leboeuf and Di Matteo arrived at Chelsea as players at the same time, both signed in 1996 by Ruud Gullit. Leboeuf, a World Cup and European Championship winner with France in 1998 and 2000 respectively, spent five years at Stamford Bridge. In that time the centre-back won the FA Cup twice, in 1997 and 2000, the League Cup in 1998 and the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup, also in 1998, as well as a smattering of other trophies.

He proved in four months that he had knowledge about football and what he did was absolutely fantastic. He used the strengths Chelsea had, ” Leboeuf said, adding: “They would have been stupid not to offer him at least a year. Di Matteo was at first considered unlikely to be given the position full-time but recent reports have tipped the Italian with a long-term stay in the Chelsea dugout after Roman Abramovich was unable to tempt Pep Guardiola into cancelling his planned sabbatical.
