Former Chelsea defender Frank Leboeuf has hailed his ex-teammate Roberto Di Matteo as the right choice to become the Blues’ next full-time manager, according to the
Leboeuf and Di Matteo arrived at Chelsea as players at the same time, both signed in 1996 by Ruud Gullit. Leboeuf, a World Cup and European Championship winner with France in 1998 and 2000 respectively, spent five years at Stamford Bridge. In that time the centre-back won the FA Cup twice, in 1997 and 2000, the League Cup in 1998 and the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup, also in 1998, as well as a smattering of other trophies.
“He proved in four months that he had knowledge about football and what he did was absolutely fantastic. He used the strengths Chelsea had, ” Leboeuf said, adding: “They would have been stupid not to offer him at least a year. Di Matteo was at first considered unlikely to be given the position full-time but recent reports have tipped the Italian with a long-term stay in the Chelsea dugout after Roman Abramovich was unable to tempt Pep Guardiola into cancelling his planned sabbatical.
