England vs Sweden – Match preview and team news

The last of the second round of games sees England take on Sweden in what could be a deciding fixture for both teams, especially the Scandinavians. After taking the lead against the co-hosts, Ukraine, they eventually slumped to a 3-2 defeat after a brace from Andriy Shevchenko – a loss tonight, depending on other results, could spell the end of their Euro 2012 run.

Sweden arrived at the tournament having won 4 of their last 5 games, the game they lost however was against tonight’s opponents England – the first time they had lost against the Three Lions in 44 years. The strike pairing for Sweden of Ibrahimovic and Elmander will be looking to continue an impressive run of goals to game ratio, with the Swedes scoring in all but three of their matches in the last year, Ibrahimovic finding the net in each of Sweden’s last four matches. The two strikers have a combined goal count of 68 goals, which in comparison to England’s strike force is particularly strong.

The English have named Andy Carroll and Danny Welbeck up front for the game, between them only have 2 goals but they have only played 11 international games. It’s a small change to the team that played against France but it does appear to be a more attacking team than the team that drew 1-1 on their opening day. Confidence will be strong in the England camp after getting a positive result against group favourites, France, as well as only losing twice in the last two seasons. To combat the impressive strike rate of the Swede’s will be an even more impressive stat from goalkeeper Joe Hart – England have never lost a competitive game with the 25-year-old in goal.

Head to head favours Sweden quite strongly, with the well documented stat that England haven’t beaten their opponents in 7 competitive games. But the most likely result seems to be a draw, the two have played out 9 draws in 22 games with England taking 7 wins – all but one of which were before 1968 – and Sweden with 6.

The two big changes expected are Carroll in for Oxlade-Chamberlain and Elmander making his first start this season for Sweden after a broken foot.

England (probable): Hart; Johnson, Terry, Lescott, A Cole; Milner, Gerrard, Parker, Young; Carroll; Welbeck.

Sweden: Isaksson; Granqvist, Mellberg, J Olsson, M Olsson; Svensson, Kallstrom, Larsson, E; Ibrahimovic; Elmander.
