Gareth Bale out of Team GB squad

Gareth Bale looks set to miss out on a place in the Team GB squad for the Olympics in London.

The BBC are reporting that the Welshman will miss the event after he aggravated an old back injury in training this week. Bale was expected to be one of the star names in Stuart Pearce’s squad, but now it seems he won’t be available for selection.

The 22-year-old will be disheartened to realise he won’t be available for London 2012, after publicly expressing his intentions to compete for a unified British team and to get the opportunity to play international football in a tournament format.

He said in May last year: “I wasn’t to play in the Olympics, I think it would be a great experience. You see it with the British and Irish Lions in the rugby, they come together as a unit and play against other countries. It’s great and there’s no reason why that can’t happen with the football.” He added: “At the moment Wales haven’t qualified for a major tournament in I don’t know how many years so it would be nice to play in one against the best countries in the world.”

This is the second time this week that the Team GB squad has hit the headlines, despite not being announced until this coming Monday. It was confirmed, however, that the much-expected inclusion of David Beckham was not going to happen. Stuart Pearce instead opting for Ryan Giggs, Craig Bellamy and Micah Richards as his three players that are over the age threshold.
